Fashion is in the Air

http://operachic.typepad.com/opera_chic/2010/08/lincoln-center-spotting-.html

I don’t care much for love, but I do know that  everywhere you turn in New York City fashion is in the air.

Whether you can’t wait to dive into your fall wardrobe after those brisk nights we had over the weekend, or the hype for fashion week and fashion’s night out has got you all a buzz it is impossible to deny the electricity surging through every fashion minded individual in all the boroughs.

Luckily, your summer clothes are cleaned( by Cameo Cleaners or Arthur Copeland) and put away to make room in your closet for all the items picked up during Fashion’s Night Out,or for the runway inspired pieces to come after attending Spring 2011 Fashion Week.

Although Fashion Week does not officially begin until tomorrow, things seem to be in full swing at Fashion Week’s new home, Lincoln Center after last night’s fashion show to kick off Fashion’s Night Out. Models and designers alike arrived sporting the limited edition t-shirts on city buses, as they than either sashayed down the runway or towards their seats.

This entrance on buses is just one factor of the new direction Lincoln Center Fashion Director, Stephanie Winston Workoff hopes to take the fashion industry in New York towards. As quoted in The New York Times, Workoff wants to ” bring fashion week to the people…removing the exclusivity of accessibility to the events and designers.”

Hosting all events in a space that is not only physically accessible, but visually as well such as Lincoln Center allows everyone in New York City to access the happenings that will be occurring over the next week. Workoff has big plans in store for Lincoln Center as the new and permanent home of fashion in New York City.

Whether you have plans to participate in all or non of the fun fashion related activities taking our fair city by storm over the next week, Cameo Cleaners of Gramercy Park and Arthur Copeland Cleansers will be open and ready to clean, alter, or repair all of your new fashion finds.

AVON Calls on Cameo Cleaners

A week ago Cameo Cleaners received a call from a production assistant working on the foreign markets Christmas  commercial for cosmetic and wellness brand Avon.

The models being used in the commercial had not been fully fitted for their outfits, and the production assistant needed someone on set that was able to provide last minute alterations, and promptly.

When the shop manager finished the call he knew exactly which of his of able tailors he would send to assist on set the following day. Cameo Cleaners of Gramercy Park has two exceptional tailors both of whom can care for any and all of your tailoring needs.

The following morning Alaina Zulli was sent to Long Island City and kept very busy fixing neck details,  altering hems, seams, and other miscellaneous wardrobe malfunctions over the course of the ten hour shoot.

Even though it is still summer we are already looking forward to the holidays, so we can see for ourselves the magnificent work Alaina did.

If you are looking for a tailor or seamstress in New York City Cameo Cleaners of Gramercy Park is the place to be.

Men’s Fashion; a True Work of Art

Having never lived among men with a genuine interest or any interest for that matter in fashion ( my father still wears jeans from 1980, and until a recent stint in London my brother was perfectly content to take on the day in gym shorts) bearing that all in mind summertime in New York has been anything but dull.

As an avid reader of the NY Times style section I couldn’t help but to take note that many of yesterdays articles were not only about men’s fashion, but more specifically pants.  Call me crazy, but in this 90 degree weather the absolute last thing I am thinking about are pants. I recognize that men’s clothing options are limitedfor it is generally frowned upon to see a man take to the streets in a dress, but then again it’s New York… anything is possible.

After reading both articles I found two striking features I believe are worth mentioning, and in an attempt to be as non-analytical as possible will quickly highlight these two things. First, the similarity. Both articles convey these pants as an artistic expression, a direct correlation to one’s attitude.  The difference between the two was the use of the word ” feeling” one article uses feeling to describe texture and the structure of the pants, while the other incorporates uses it as a barometer of one’s mood and individuality.

No matter if you prefer your pants cuffed, pleated, textured, pressed, rolled, plain, pink, or classic Cameo Cleaners of Gramercy Park can handle each and every need you and your pants could ever have. Pants too long so you have to roll? Come visit our expert tailor so that you can opt to cuff your pants and not act out of necessity.

Cameo Cleaners Tailor Sprinkles a Little Fairy Dust

Cameo Cleaners involvement with Operation Fairy Dust does not stop once the spring event is over. The master tailor, Rafael Nunez is currently working on one of the coveted Oscar De La Renta gowns for Sarah Etuk, an 18 year old senior from Harlem who attended the Operation Fairy Dust event at Brooklyn Borough Hall on April 17,2010.

The head turning black gown with a lace bodice, and voluminous tulle skirt was the 16th dress she had tried on that day. After numerous attempts, Sarah knew this dress was for her the moment she zipped it up.

After speaking with owner & dress expert, Jerry Pozniak about her dress needs Sarah and her mother visited Cameo Cleaners of Gramercy Park to meet with the tailor for the first time. Rafael spent quality time adjusting and readjusting the material of this gown with Sarah to ensure that the look was appropriate for a high school age girl. This is true of all the work Rafael performs as he is very diligent and patient with all Cameo clients who trust him to alter their couture gowns.

Rafael certainly has his work cut out for him with Sarah’s gown, for the tulle ballroom skirt was damaged from being tried on so many times, and the man layers of tulle were very overwhelming on her slender figure. The tailor at Cameo Cleaners chose to remove the bottom layer of tulle from the gown to transform the overall look from Hollywood glamor to high school prom. The material on the back was also closed by Rafael, so that it resembles a bridal bustle and will not interfere with Sarah’s ability to move at the prom.

Sarah has visited us at Cameo Cleaners multiple times to receive fittings on the gown as is customary when dealing with formal alterations, and has shared with us the many details of her prom ensemble. She has some fabulous black peep toe pumps that match the bustle in the back almost perfectly. She also has plans to make gloves for herself and a tie for her date out of the extra tulle fabric from the dress.

This fashionista’s requests will be no trouble for our master tailor, as he consistently helps many in Manhattan to look their best.appropriate that we should get such a fashionista in our store.

Sarah’s prom is  Memorial day weekend, and with her new prom dress she is sure to look like a million bucks- for free. We hope that Sarah will come back to visit us after her prom and share her pictures, so that we can enjoy her Cinderella moment.

Dreams

“Fairy tales can come true, it can happen to you…”, Frank Sinatra.

I digress this week. Instead of fashion, this week it’s about 1600 girls.

Girls who dream of going to their high school prom, parents out of work and money problems.

No, this is not going in that direction. This is not about negativity.

This is a thank you.

A thank you to Megan Kerrigan and Rashia Bell for their tireless efforts to make dreams come true. Their organization, Operation Fairy Dust, along with many volunteers made it all possible.

3600 dresses were collected, a high-school cafeteria transformed into a boutique and 1600 girls shopped and smiled.

Smiles of gratitude and empowerment. Girls able to pick, try on, and model. Beaming moms with tear’s streaming. Dreams realized. Problems forgotten even if just for a day.

Do watch this short video, it will make you smile. ( Operation Fairy Dust Video)

Fairy tales do come true. Kudos to Megan and Rashia, true angels.

Thanks for listening. Jerry Pozniak
