Fur Cleaning and Glazing
Fur Cleaning

“Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but mink is the best thing a girl can wear.”

When the weather warms, it’s time to send your fur coats on a summer vacation. The heat of summer in non-air-conditioned closets will start to dry out the skins of your precious fur items causing them to become dry and brittle.

Fur that is cleaned annually and kept out of the heat during the summer will last much longer than those coats that are not.

Some clients that have been sending us their coats for 25 years for cleaning and storage have praised us for keeping their furs looking like new!

Fur items are cleaned using a process which differs greatly from the fabric cleaning method.

  •  First, the fur garment is tumbled with corn cobs to loosen and remove all soil.
  • Then, the fur is vacuumed to remove all corn cobs from both the fur as well as the lining.
  • Finally, the fur is glazed to reintroduce oils to the fur as well as realign the hairs of the fur. The glazing process imparts a natural sheen to the hairs.

Fur-lined raincoats create a particular problem in cleaning. The cloth part needs to be cleaned using the fabric method and the fur lining needs the fur method. If the fur lining is not removable, our tailoring team will need to separate the fur from the cloth.

So please, protect your investment and make sure your fur is cleaned every year and spends the hot summer in the cold.
